Case Study: Traffic Management for BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend 2022

Overview

In May 2022, BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend brought tens of thousands of music fans together for one of the UK’s most anticipated live events. The festival’s scale and location demanded a precise, safety-led traffic management approach to ensure that thousands of vehicles, pedestrians, and public transport users could move safely and efficiently throughout the weekend.

Event Support Team (EST) was proud to be appointed as the traffic management provider for the event, responsible for designing and delivering a full end-to-end traffic plan that balanced public safety, efficient transport flow, and minimal local disruption.

The Challenge

The 2022 event presented a unique logistical challenge. With such a large influx of visitors, pedestrian movement was expected to far exceed vehicle use, making traditional park-and-ride models impractical.

Key challenges included:

  • Ensuring safe ingress and egress for tens of thousands of pedestrians.
  • Managing significant transport activity in and around the local road network.
  • Minimising disruption to bus routes and local residents.
  • Maintaining compliance with safety standards under rapidly changing event conditions.

The event required a bespoke traffic management solution, designed around pedestrian safety and dynamic on-the-ground response.

Our Approach

Collaborative Planning and Compliance

EST worked closely with BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend organisers, local councils, and the Safety Advisory Group (SAG) to develop a detailed, compliant Traffic Management Plan (TMP).
By attending Safety Advisory Group meetings throughout the planning phase, EST ensured that the plan met all local authority regulations, Chapter 8 standards, and safety best practices.

This early engagement allowed the team to identify potential risks and develop proactive mitigation strategies well before the event weekend.

Bespoke Ingress and Egress Strategy

Given the volume of pedestrian traffic, a park-and-ride model was deemed unfeasible. Instead, EST designed a dedicated pedestrian ingress and egress strategy, ensuring:

  • Clearly defined walking routes between key arrival points and the event site.
  • Segregation between vehicle and pedestrian movements to enhance safety.
  • Staggered exit plans to minimise congestion at peak times.

Integrated Transport Coordination

To maintain smooth movement across the wider network, EST rerouted bus services and adjusted traffic flows in coordination with local transport authorities. This required a deep understanding of Sheffield’s transport infrastructure and careful real-time communication with bus operators and emergency services.

On-Site Implementation

During the event, EST’s experienced traffic management operatives and marshals were deployed across critical junctions and access routes. Their responsibilities included:

  • Installing and maintaining temporary road signage and barriers.
  • Directing pedestrian and vehicle traffic in real time.
  • Monitoring flow and adapting operations as conditions changed.

Continuous communication between site teams and control ensured swift, effective responses to any developing situations.

The Results

Thanks to EST’s detailed planning, collaborative working, and agile on-site execution:

  • No major traffic or safety incidents were reported during the event.
  • Pedestrian flow remained controlled and efficient, despite extremely high footfall.
  • Public transport and emergency routes remained fully operational throughout the weekend.
  • The event achieved full compliance with Chapter 8 and local authority safety standards.

The success of BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend 2022 reaffirmed EST’s reputation as a trusted partner for large-scale, high-profile events requiring precision traffic and crowd management.
